A Place Called Home is a non-profit, charitable organization.  We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to return to at the end of the day.

Currently, A Place Called Home operates a 24-hour 19-bed hostel for men, women & children who are homeless in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the County of Haliburton. Additionally, in cooperation with CKL, A Place Called Home offers a number of ‘Homeless Prevention” programs, helping to keep people in their homes and reducing their risk of becoming homeless.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton promotes and monitors long-term supportive friendships for children through quality relationships with caring adults.  The programs offer volunteers an opportunity to help children reach their full potential by increasing the child’s self-esteem and confidence.  The activities that these friends enjoy together include hiking, biking, fishing, cooking, reading, crafts and swimming just to name a few.  Some of the positive impacts on the community include less reliance on social assistance as an adult, improved success in school and less contact with the justice system.

The positive impacts also extend to the personal lives of the volunteers; helping improve their relationships and community satisfaction.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes is one of the area’s largest and most diverse child and youth serving organizations. Established in 1970, the Club provides: summer camps; before- and after-school programs; licensed child care; child and youth counselling; infant development; sports and recreation; adventure; and youth restorative justice  programs in nine local communities.

The Club currently serves over 2,500 children, youth and their families through services that:  foster self-esteem, build skills and develop character for youth. Most importantly, the Club removes financial barriers to participation by keeping program costs affordable and subsidizing all of its programs for families who can’t afford to pay. At the Boys & Girls Club, children and youth learn to become valuable members of their communities.

Funded Programs: Core Funding, Rural  Communities Programs: Children’s Drop-in Centre, Resource Centre. Subsidized programming: programs currently in the communities of: Bobcaygeon, Coboconk, Dunsford, Fenelon Falls, Kirkfield, Manvers, Omemee, and Woodville.

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Kawartha Lakes Branch is part of a national, voluntary organization comprised of consumers/survivors of the mental health system, their families/friends, staff, volunteers, and other members of the community.  It exists to promote mental health recovery and resilience through support services and advocacy.  CMHA also provides education and  promotion of integrated care services in partnership with individuals, families and community partners in the City of Kawartha Lakes, the County of Haliburton and the Township of Brock.

CNIB has been making a profound difference in the lives of Canadians since 1918, providing services and supports necessary to clients living with vision loss.  Services include Low Vision Services, Registration & Referral, Independent Living Skills, Orientation & Mobility, Employment Services, Assistive Technology &  Consumer Products, Library Services, Volunteer Services, Peer Support.

The Canadian Red Cross is a non-profit humanitarian organization, focused on one strategic goal: to improve the situation of the vulnerable.  The agency helps people deal with situations that threaten their survival and safety, their security and well-being, and their human dignity.

With the assistance of close to 700 volunteers and 50 staff, Community Care provides home support services to seniors and special needs clients throughout the City.  Services and programs are designed to enable clients to remain living at home as independently as possible in their own communities.  Services can be accessed directly from the local offices, or through the administrative office in Lindsay.

Community Living Kawartha Lakes is a charitable, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting children, youth and adults with intellectual challenges and their families in order to achieve their personal goals and participate in the development of healthy, inclusive communities. Services are made possible by financial support from government funding, United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes, corporate sponsorship, fundraising projects and volunteer assistance.

Telecare Lindsay has operated in the community since 1973.  The centre is staffed by more than 30 volunteers who have taken an extensive, 50-hour training program. Telecare Lindsay is a member of the Telecare Distress Centers of Ontario, and of Lifeline International. Telecare is able to provide human service connections on a 24-hour basis, through the Telecare Peterborough Centre.

The OEYC offers support and education for parents, parents-to-be and private home child caregivers.  Parents/ caregivers and their children are welcome to attend the drop-in and/or registered parenting programs.  In addition to the Lindsay and Fenelon Falls sites, OEYC sets up parent/child activities in churches, community centres etc. in outlying towns and villages in the City of Kawartha Lakes.  Funding is diversified, and includes a significant fundraising commitment on the agency’s behalf.

This service allows the general public easy on-line access to community health and social service information including local volunteer opportunities.
