Tampon Tuesday for International Women’s Day

Celebrate International Women’s Day with United Way CKL and the Lindsay and District Labour Council by donating a pack of menstrual products. Drop them off to our office at 50 Mary St West in Lindsay or at any of the businesses listed above.

We are collecting hygiene products until Friday March 28th. We will then distribute the products to local organizations and networks where there is a high need for menstrual products.

1 in 4 women in Canada experience period poverty and are often choosing between purchasing food or purchasing their necessary hygiene items. In honour of Women’s Day, we hope folks will consider picking up an extra pack of product at the store and dropping off to us or the other partnering businesses.

We encourage other groups to start their own drives. If you have a large donation, please contact Emily (emily@ckl.unitedway.ca) to arrange the drop off and a photo op.

United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes kick off greets new leadership, celebrates retirement, and announces new matching grant

On Tuesday, September 28th, the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes (UWCKL) held its annual fundraising campaign kick off event at Edwin Binney’s Community Garden with the introduction of a new Matching Collaborative Grant. They also welcomed Paul Murphy as new Board President, introduced Emily Beall and Shantal Ingram as new Co-Executive Directors, and bid warm retirement wishes to outgoing Executive Director Penny Barton Dyke.

(left to right) Murphy, Ingram, and Beall address kick off attendees.

Paul Murphy, the current General Manager of Crayola Canada, has been a long-time supporter of UWCKL, most notably through the agency’s supportive relationship with Crayola. Concerning his appointment to Board President Murphy offers, “I have been involved with UWCKL for many years as a Crayolian: volunteering at the sales, fundraising and trying to support where I could… I am very honoured and proud to be working with not only the great individuals that make up the Board, but also with our fabulous staff.” Murphy then introduced UWCKL’s newest funding opportunity, the Matching Collaborative Grant.

This new Matching Collaborative Grant will award up to $10,000 per project, contingent on the collaborating agencies providing a matching amount of funds to what has been requested (in capital, not in-kind). Each application requires a minimum of three collaborating agencies, at least one of which must be registered as a charitable organization with the CRA, to receive funds. All partners must be located or serving clientele in Kawartha Lakes and/or Haliburton County. Two grants will be available in this funding stream, one in Kawartha Lakes and one in Haliburton County.

Shantal Ingram, incoming Co-Executive Director notes “UWCKL has been promoting collective impact models for a decade and a half.  It is important to look at ways to strengthen our community impact on poverty and collaboration is the necessary.  Although many collaborations exist, at times those involved need an infusion to look at some innovative tactics. UWCKL is and will remain focused on actions to end poverty and help our most vulnerable. We hope to inspire new partners to join and also further match the funds given out to help increase our trajectory of ending poverty.”

For more information, guidelines, and application please visit www.ckl-unitedway.ca/funding.

Outgoing Executive Director Penny Barton Dyke greets an attendee.

UWCKL’s two incoming Co-Executive Directors then took the time to update attendees on ongoing and future initiatives introduce this year’s Campaign Chairs Jeff Tompkins and Brian Nash representing the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County respectively. Several staff and board members then took a few moments to congratulate outgoing ED Penny Barton Dyke on her 17 ½ years of service to UWCKL and the community before Barton-Dyke addressed attendees herself, imparting praise and advice on both Beall and Ingram as the UWCKL begins its next chapter.

50th Anniversary Community Champions Touchdown Dinner an Unprecedented Success

Our 2018 Campaign Touchdown Dinner Event was our most successful yet. This year we were able to secure some incredible silent auction prizes and event sponsors to come away with over $5,000.00! Our guest speaker Denise Hepburn, retired 8-Wing Master Corporal, was an inspiration to all as she told her story of the incredible battle she has faced after suffering a C2 spinal injury in a training exercise: an injury with a 5% survival rate. She overcame the physical challenges and continues to deal with the mental health side of a life-long injury. Her fortitude helped drive her to compete in the 2017 Invictus Games in rowing, seated volleyball and swimming. She won four bronze medals in swimming. Denise spoke about the importance of having support systems like United Way in place for people who are suffering from mental health issues. She is proud to be able to bring awareness to mental health initiatives and hopes sharing her journey will encourage others to reach out for help, especially those dealing with PTSD.

We wish to sincerely thank our sponsors for this event, along with the VCCS Employment team for their incredible support of this event. Without you, there would be no way. Read more about the Touchdown event and our upcoming projects, as well as new volunteer opportunities in our Spring Newsletter!

Chris Hadfield visits the Kawartha Lakes

The United Way for City of Kawartha Lakes is pleased to announce that Col. Chris Hadfield will be presenting his colourful and inspirational keynote address at the Academy Theatre in Lindsay, Ontario on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 8:00p.m.

Col. Chris Hadfield was raised on a corn farm in Ontario and grew up to be the first Canadian to command a spaceship, as well as the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space. He’s a New York Times bestselling author who became a YouTube sensation when he captivated the world through social media with his photos, stories and music while onboard the International Space Station in 2013.  This list is only a tiny portion of his accomplishments.  With experiences like these, Col. Chris Hadfield will be a fascinating and engaging speaker.

“This is an amazing boost for our area,” stated Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director of the United Way for CKL.  “Col. Hadfield is internationally renowned and so inspirational.  We are excited to have his visit coincide with both the 150th Anniversary of Canada and the 50th Anniversary of our United Way!  We are grateful to the Three Chairs Committee and the sponsors that have made this fundraiser possible.”

Barb Truax of the Three Chairs Committee said, “Our goal is to host a successful and entertaining event to show our support for the United Way.  The UW funded 11 agencies to help 30,000 people from our community last year.  When the idea was spawned to find an outstanding and interesting keynote speaker … Col. Chris Hadfield was our immediate first choice.  He often speaks to much larger crowds and in much larger venues.  We are just thrilled that he will join us here in Lindsay for an intimate evening in our beautiful, historic Academy Theatre.”

Tickets to “Out of This World with Col. Chris Hadfield” are available now at the Academy Theatre box office (705) 324-9111

Or online at:  academytheatre.ca
